LIVE: Drugdealer Cheerleader – Bradford Gasworks, 27/3/09
Plus special guests Disarm
It would appear that the rock revival in Bradford is well and truly underway. The Gasworks now has a new home and is bringing back good memories of the old Rio’s club before it moved to Leeds and became a pale shadow of its former glorious self. Lots of alcohol, a DJ playing Tigertailz and Cinderella and two damn good bands…what more could anyone want?
Disarm, kicking things off tonight, detonate the place like an A-bomb just hit West Yorkshire. With “By Any Means Necessary” now well established as one of the best debut albums of last year, this is a triumphant set which doesn’t let up through its half-hour duration as “She’s My Disease”, “Bring Me The Head Of Dorothy Gale” and the storming title track get an initially reticient crowd down the front and moshing. Good stuff.
While it’d be fair to say that Disarm will probably be beginning work on their second album in the not-too-distant future, headliners Drugdealer Cheerleader have theirs safely in the can according to manic frontman Hilda and we get a few tasters from it tonight, all of which suggest it’ll be a worthy follow up to 2007’s excellent “Enjoy The Time You Waste”. Elsewhere, the likes of “LMFAO”, “Fireworks” and “Gimme Some Love” are a welcome reminder of what this band are capable of (only complaint is no “The Guv’nor” but I guess you can’t have everything) and as “Maximum Power” brings the set to a close they get a good ovation from the Bradford faithful.
“Top venue this, eh?” observes Hilda halfway through the set. He’s not wrong. Let’s just hope tonight is the first of many great gigs I’m gonna see at this place.
