Single review: Black Page Turns – Simplest of Tools
Self styled ‘rock-metallers’ Black Page Turns are the new Leicester-based band of singer Mike A, who Pure Rawk readers of old may remember from melodic rockers The Authentics.I have to admit I was never hugely taken by The Authentics (although I hasten to add, I know plenty that were), and I have to say on the evidence of this single, I’m not greatly taken by Black Page Turns either. The rhythms and the structures are there, but very little sticks with me when the record finishes.
In spite of the scuzzy metal guitars, in often very heavy arrangements, somehow these two tracks seem very… light. Even Mike’s usually very melodic vocals seem to have very little bite. It’s far too soft to ever be a hard rock or metal record, and there just doesn’t seem to be enough hooks for it to make it as pop-rock either.
Maybe this will appeal to ex-Authentics fans, but sadly it does nothing for me.
