LIVE – King Salami & The Cumberland 3/Atomic Suplex (The Gaff, 27/8/10)
Atomic Suplex are what I’d imagine happens if you take a garage band and leave them in said garage for a few hours with the exhaust still running.
Supremely raw but with a power behind them that can’t be denied, this is a wonderfully chaotic set with the band leaping around the stage like human stock cars while the crash helmet-clad lead singer screams his lyrics out through a distorter which has a good few people inching away from the stage ever so slightly scared. A bit of fine tuning here and there possibly wouldn’t go amiss on them but this was a fun way to kick off Friday night at the Gaff.
Tonight’s headliners on Holloway Road, King Salami & The Cumberland 3, are what you’d imagine Danko Jones would sound like if he suddenly discovered a love of rockabilly music on his new album. Awesomely tight and focused, this lot are definitely a group to look out for. Songs like “Funky Walk”, “Mojo Workout” and the pun-tastic “Do The Wurst” sound like some fantastic hybrid of Jerry Lee Lewis and ’60s garage rock with a dose of James Brown casually slung in. It’s pretty damn good and it makes for a very entertaining 45 minutes. Definitely a good way to start the weekend with a bang(er).
