Something that tends to cloud people’s judgment of this group is the notion that they’ve had an easy ride due to frontwoman Amber’s modelling past but this, if you’ll pardon my French, is b*llocks. The proof is always gonna be in the tunes and here tonight, Nemhain more than deliver on this front.
If you want to compare this band to anything, I’d describe them as a slightly gothier British version of the Distillers – certainly the focused fury of “Ana” and “Second Skin” wouldn’t have sounded out of place if Brody Dalle had penned them while their cover of the Misfits’ “Die Die My Darling” absolutely smokes Metallica’s half-arsed “Garage Inc” version. Obviously the focus with this band is always going to be on Amber and lightning-fingered bass vixen Lisa first and foremost but Nemhain are a pretty solid band all round as former Cradle of Filth drummer Adrian provides a thunderous beat throughout and guitarists Lakis and Sam make up a blistering double-riff attack to power along the likes of “From The Ashes” and “Speed Queen”. It has to be said that Nemhain, and especially Amber, have a good live presence as well – for all the doomy sentiments of songs like “Heroin Child”, they seem to be having the absolute time of their lives up there, offering out shots from a vodka syringe to the front row and cheerfully engaging in some banter with the audience.
So then do they mean it? You bet they bloody do. Put those pointless preconceptions to one side and check this band out now.
