The John Rayner Award: new for 2011
Pure Rawk is pleased to announce a new award introduced for this year in honour of one of our good friends.
Our dear friend, John Rayner (pictured centrally above with frontmen Brad of Disarm and Richie of Kitty Hudson respectively) sadly passed away in June last year after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis. He was only 42 when he passed and had been suffering with the disease for a lot of his life. However, throughout that time – he would be going out to as many gigs as he could across the capital and even further afield, camera in hand.
We thought one of the best ways to honour John’s memory is to name an award after him to celebrate how important people like John are in the underground music scene.
This year, we are inviting people to email us in with nominations of people they feel help keep the underground rock scene ticking along. Whether it be someone you know is devoted to the underground scene or provides help and assistance to bands and local promoters just for fun – we’d love to hear your stories. The email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. Give us their name, how to contact them and why they should be nominated.
John’s parents, partner and a few of his family will be attending the awards. Nikki Carpenter, his partner’s (Judith) daughter and close friend of John said “we are all absolutely honoured for you to make an award in his name – he would have loved that so much and would have been so chuffed!”.
Time-Bomb are sponsoring this award and it is a 100% charity sponsorship where the money we have received will be distributed between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Transplant Ward at Harefield Hospital where John was treated.
We will also holding a tasty cupcake sale on the night with ‘rocked up’ cake offerings (where the entire sale proceeds will go to the two charities.
