Album Review: Circles – “The Compass”
Good lord, were did this come from?.. Australia to be exact! I don’t know where I’ve been (apart from in Denmark) since the release last summer, but I’ve been catching up and listening non stop for the last two weeks now.
The Frontline and Clouds Are Gathering lead the mini album perfectly, certainly the top 2 tracks of the release, Act III takes a slower adjustment whilst Eye Embedded is perhaps the pop track of the album. The Design makes me think of a TesseracT/Textures crossover, reassuring that any prog and tech metal fan will love this band. The album ends in Ruins, with awesome bassing from Drew Patton.
Musically Circles are a very chunky groove; think of a more melodic Periphery, structured by Textures but also with a slight injection of Mindless Self Indulgence. The vocals, from Perry Kakridas, ooze Brandon Boyd with a dose of Mike Patton and is fantastic to hear. The Compass has an energetic momentum with a solid coherence, stella guitaring throughout and flawless drumming, one of the best things I’ve heard all year, you really need this!
