Album Review: The Hip Priests – “Full Tilt Bullshit”
You could probably guess this by just a cursory look at the song titles on this album (“Loud ‘n’ Lewd”, “Outta My Head, Into Your Pants”, the list goes on and on) but it’s fair to say that the Hip Priests aren’t the sort of band you’d want to take home to meet your mum. Fixated on cheap booze and dirty sex, this is very much rock ‘n’ roll distilled down to its most basic form – when they scream “Get loose and squeeze the juice!” on opening onslaught “Sonic Reproducer” it’s reasonable to assume that it almost certainly isn’t an ode to working with the man from Del Monte (though I’m prepared to be proved wrong on this one by photographic evidence should anyone have it). And, safe to say, it rocks like the proverbial motherfunster.
Essentially, “Full Tilt Bullshit” sounds like the Dead Boys covering Zodiac Mindwarp while Iggy and Lemmy nod approvingly in the control room and Turbonegro head back from the off license with some suitably cheap ‘n’ nasty vodka to be consumed afterwards. Don’t expect any subtlety in other words but songs like “Wrist Action”, “Demon In My Genes” and “Faster Than F**k” have some great riffs, choruses you can headbang like a lunatic to and really, that’s what matters at the end of the day.
So yes, it’s safe to say that Coldplay fans, emo kids and trad rockers will hate this album. Good. For those of us who like a spot of good unclean fun though, this comes highly recommended.
