Single Review: The Priscillas – “Searching for Simon”
Originally written as the theme song for Martin Gooch’s sci-fi film The Search for Simon, the self-explanatory Searching for Simon takes The Priscillas in an appropriately sci-fi new direction. Never a stranger to a bit of Rocky Horror camp, with the swirling spacey sounds on this one, they’ve also added an Electric Barbarella retro-futuristic vibe (the film, not the Duran Duran track, mostly). Bizarrely, the end result sounds a bit like Icelandic indiepoppers Bellatrix, if anyone remembers them, which isn’t a bad thing at all in my book.
This single also comes with b-side Bad Girl, which is more familiar Priscillas territory, with its glam stomp meets girl punk attitude. It’s brash and in your face, and whilst it’s hardly breaking any new ground in terms of originality (the eponymous “bad girl” is exactly what you’re expecting), it’s a great piece of snotty pop.
Put together, these two tracks are musically two different sides on The Priscillas, but they share a sense of fun that is a hallmark of this band. If you like your punk to have an air of theatrical camp, then definitely look them up.
