Album Review: The Hip Priests – “Black Denim Blitz”
Third album proper from Nottingham’s self-professed “pissed up sex pests” The Hip Priests and it’s very much business as usual here. They still sound like a five-way stock car pile-up involving the Stooges, Motorhead, Turbonegro, The Dead Boys and The Anti-Nowhere League, and that’s definitely not a bad place to be. And, as the opening one-two of Vodkacoma Casanova and Motherfucker Superior bears out, they’re doing anything but growing up gracefully.
If you’ve heard either of their previous efforts then it’s pretty safe to say that you can probably guess how Black Denim Blitz is gonna go, but the quality on offer is still admirably high. Zero Fucks Given and Good Things Come To Those Who Hate take the sheer manic energy of the Stooges (Gimme Some Skin in particular with the latter) and wrap it round five minutes of chaos while the ferocious 1000 Watts of Lust and the ANWL soundalike Your Band’s Shit are pure Lemmy indebted “pile ahead and race to the finish line” slices of thrash. They even throw in a duet of all things with the hilariously OTT ode to sado-masochism that is Treat Me Like Dirt, while live anthem in waiting Jesus Died So We Could Ride (with a pipe organ outro that’s the sonic equivalent of pissing in the church pews) is definitely the highlight here.
Like we said, business as usual then (let’s be honest, with a song called Survival of the Shittest, what did you really expect?). But when the business you peddle is as much fun as this, that’s definitely better than no business at all.
Yes, they're not exactly unpredictable in their musical stylings but for sheer evil sounding sonic debauchery, the Hip Priests have proved once again why they're such a highly regarded band. Put it this way, Black Denim Blitz put a big grin on my face after an astonishingly shit day and any album that can do that has to be doing something right. Give it a spin and let yer dark side loose.
