EP Review: The Main Grains – “Don’t Believe Everything You Think”
With a line-up featuring ex-Wildhearts/Yo-Yo’s bassist Danny McCormack, ex-Phluid/Velvet Star drummer Ginna and ex-Modern Day Dukes guitarist Ben Marsden, The Main Grains definitely come with an impressive rock pedigree and Don’t Believe Everything You Think is, as you’d expect, a confident first shot across the bows from them.
The spirit of Danny’s two former bands definitely hangs heavy over this collection – Spend Your Money has a rumbling bassline reminiscent of The Wildhearts’ Anthem and Fine By You could have come from the ‘Hearts’ Riff After Riff… sessions. Meanwhile, the freewheeling Unscrewed, I’d Rather Be In California and Happy Round Here all would have sounded at home on The Yo-Yo’s under-rated Uppers And Downers album with their big chantalong choruses and sky-surfing riffs. The frenetic Ramones-esque She’s A Catch which closes this one meanwhile is a distant cousin of The Yo-Yo’s old set closer Keep On Keepin’ On, and all the better for it.
It's good to see Danny back with some new music and better still that he's made his comeback with a strong effort here. Don't Believe Everything You Think is 7 tracks and 20 minutes of lean fat-free rock 'n' roll which you can see working well in the live arena. Fingers crossed we'll get a full album from this lot to sink our teeth into before the year's out.
