Album Review: The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell – “Keep It Greasy!”
Now on their third album, there’s certainly no sign of The Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell easing up on the heaviness. For those unfamiliar with this Hastings outfit, they peddle an intoxicating fuzzed-up brew of classic rock riffs and stoner rock heaviness. Indeed, Keep It Greasy! could almost be mistaken for that long-awaited third Black Spiders album if you squint a bit.
The best track on here is probably the opener U Got Wot I Need which sounds like a supremely scuzzed up take on the riff from Mud’s Tiger Feet and might just be the best tune ASCS have done to date. Thereafter though, we’re in more familiar territory with the lurching likes of Hairy Brain Pt 2, I’m Movin’ and Paid In Full sounding like the sort of big juddering epics that Monster Magnet and Orange Goblin used to do so well back in the day. The more focused likes of Hawkline Monkstar and Potato Boy meanwhile sound like Motorhead going overboard on the distortion pedals, and certainly the vocals definitely have a hint of Lemmy about them throughout.
All in all, Keep It Greasy! keeps up the good Admiral’s standards so far. If big woozy riffs and a bit of well-aimed aggression are your thing then this should definitely satisfy.
Pretty much a straight continuation of the Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell's first two albums, but if the formula's working well then there's no reason to change it. Keep It Greasy! is a good mix of 70s rock fist-in-the-air dynamics mixed with riffs heavier than a concrete brontosaurus. In other words, as the title suggests, it's all good unclean fun. Recommended.
