PREVIEW: Summer Weird Sin 2017, Brixton Windmill
Always one of our favourite events of August, Summer Weird Sin, the summer all-dayer & BBQ from those cheeky scamps at Some Weird Sin promotions, is back again for its fifth year at Brixton’s ever funky Windmill. Here are our top tips for the day…
Blue Carpet Band
Still very much on the up and coming, we first caught these guys in an explosive show at T Chances in Tottenham, where the singer had to stop serving at the bar to come sing! A healthy dose of greaser rockabilly leading into a bit of screaming Stooges, Blue Carpet Band are slowly refining their primal urges into a coherent live show… but not too coherent!
I’m pretty sure you all know Fiascos by now, it’s the latest evolution in the Kitty Hudson story, featuring Richie “Lord Mayor of Croydon” Hudson and Keef “Identity” Gibbs, along with Ben from Spizzenergi and Robin Guy from, well, most other bands you like. Speeding punk hits sweet powerpop in a car crash of boozy party tunes. They’re on at 7.30pm, which is for everyone’s benefit as they’ll be incoherent by 9pm…
The Empty Page
Another one you must have heard by now – Kelii and Giz formerly of Obsessive Compulsive kicking out sub-pop sounds. Named after a Sonic Youth album and with an obvious influence, Kel and the gang mix riot grrrl, grunge and 90s indie with some solid Mancunian grit and make it all their own.
The Sly Persuaders
If you want to imagine Jonny Bravo singing rockabilly fronting a garage-psych band with a sprinkling Bad Seeds and maracas, then that’s pretty much what you’ve got in The Sly Persuaders. Cool, suave and a bit menacing, but also eminently danceable, they put out a blinding debut album this spring, and will be second from top of the bill tonight!
Self-proclaimed loudest power-pop band in the World Los Pepes are the perfect headliner for Summer Weird Sin, singing summery sweet melodies with plenty of punk rock grunt behind them. You won’t need to know the words to dance, but fans will have plenty of chance to singalong with three albums under their belt, their latest being just this spring.
