New Breed #6: The Black Bear Saloon

Nix

A new series of ‘ones to watch’ in the underground rock and metal world. Meet our sixth band, the Black Bear Saloon.

You wouldn’t challenge the four lads in Belfast’s the Black Bear Saloon to a fight. But you most certainly would listen to their music. Pretty much a self proclaimed ‘local band’, TBBS haven’t yet ventured over to the UK but have already invaded the NME.

Shouty, hooky, tight (no, we’re not talking t-shirts here) are the best ways to describe TBBS. Made up from members of previous band, Throat – they liken themselves to Clutch but they are much catchier. They have distinct undertones of Therapy? and flavour-of-the-moment rock fellows, The Bronx. Its very appealing material for the intellectual rocker. Tracks such as ‘Face The Future’ and ‘The Thirst’ are the strongest ones on show.

In short, they’re worth your attention and at least 12mb on your iPod. Also, they could give Neil Fallon and co a run for their money in a beards-in-a-band competition. Check out www.myspace.com/theblackbearsaloon for the word on the street.
