Singles Roundup October 2017

Corr, it’s a bit nippy out there now isn’t it kids? Well, as Halloween (aka, Christmas for goths) approaches, here are a few tunes from the last month to add to your All Hallows Eve playlist…

The Pink Diamond Revue – Go Go Girl

Coming in with some spectacularly squelchy synth sounds in the style of classic Ladytron, Pink Diamond Revue give us a wonderfully sleazy electro sound, which I suppose is pretty apt considering it is basically a song about nudie dancers. Mixing some greasy guitar work with spoken word samples in a style redolent of Zen Motel’s Trackside Pussy (remember that one?), this is just under four  minutes of high quality psychedelic perversion.

We’ve just missed telling you about their gig at The Windmill in Brixton last night (30th), but you can catch the video for Go Go Girl over on YouTube.

Hardcore Superstar – Have Mercy On Me

Speaking of current gigs, Hardcore Superstar are touring the UK this week in support of wrestler Chris Jericho’s heavy metal band Fozzy, which ends in Newcastle this Sunday. To go with the tour, the glam rock n roll Swedes have given us the single Have Mercy On Me, which is a great fun slice of no nonsense party rock.

We are promised an album to follow in spring 2018, but for now, you can watch the video on YouTube.

Rews – Your Tears

Getting a lot of love from the likes of John Kennedy on Radio X and Mark Radcliffe on 6 Music, as well as interest from the more rock stations like Planet Rock and Kerrang, and this reflect a sound that straddles indie and hard rock quite nicely. Creating a massive powerful sound through just drums and heavy guitar, Rews’ previous single Shine certainly pricked a few ears, and this latest, Your Tears is sure to prick a few more, reminding us a little of some of our favourites like Shush or JoanOvArc, with a 2017 twist.

You can catch Rews on a UK tour this November, and see the video for Your Tears (the song, not your actual tears) on, you guessed it, this YouTube link!

Venus Envy – You Flexi Thing Vol 3

Nice to see that the guys at R*E*P*E*A*T Records are still knocking around, I haven’t been keeping up with their latest work, but they always did have a great ear when selecting bands for the legendary R*E*P*E*A*T fanzine. Venus Envy – You Flexi Thing Vol 3 is their latest, yes you guessed it, bright orange flexi disc release, featuring two hot riot grrl tracks. From the Baby Seals we have a brash celebration of female masturbation in Vibrator, which brings the brash sexuality of Elastica and mixes in a bit of powerpop for good measure. Beverley Kills on the b-side attack give us Intimidation, a track which reminds me instrumentally a bit of early Idlewild, with the vocal and message being fighting back against all the usual patriarchal bollocks.

You can hear the Baby Seals track over on Bandcamp, where you can also buy the vinyl.

Sarah Vista – Killing Fever

And now a break of pace from all the punk rock I’ve been feeding you, how about a bit of country and western? Yeah, you heard me, country music. But, dear friends, with a twist, as this is the latest persona of our old friend Kiria, of eponymous, Missy Le Pink and Viva Le Pink fame, who after a spell in rockabilly, finds herself exploring its roots. Killing Fever is her third single, a slow menacing murder ballad, as used in the upcoming western The Price Of Death. It’s also backed with a fiddle-heavy version of live favourite You’re A Day Late And A Dollar Short which is guaranteed to get your toe tapping.

We caught Sarah at the single launch in Tufnell Park a few weeks back, but we didn’t hang around, as people around her have a habit of catching a bullet of late… You though can watch the video in relative safety on YouTube.
